Episode 2-15 The Rollercoaster

Welcome back listeners!

In the first period we discuss a series of games in which the Flames looked listless and uninspired and then a couple where they looked formidable as they did at times last year. We talk about the injury to Giordano, the forward lines, and what the outlook for the near future is.

In the second period, we talk about the injury to Fredrik Anderson in Toronto and the move to bring in Jack Campbell and Kyle Clifford from the LA Kings. The trade between Pittsburgh and Minnesota that sends Zucker to the Penguins is reviewed. We also talk about the Blue Jackets losing Norris contender Seth Jones for the foreseeable future and whether they will be able to overcome that. Finally we talk about the Darnell Nurse contract extension in Edmonton, a bit surprising being a two year deal.

In period 3 we take a very early look at the draft class of 2019. So far, the top picks Jack Hughes and Kappo Kakko have disappointed and there are not many other standouts. Will this be another 2012 draft where the top end fall way short of expectations?

Episode 021 Hey There Iginla

Welcome back listeners! In this week’s podcast we discuss the career of Jarome Iginla and other candidates that may see their Flames jersey retired or honored, the week that was for the Calgary Flames, and the possibility of the Columbus Blue Jackets missing the playoffs.

 

Episode 020 Trade Deadline Talk

Welcome back listeners! We are posting a bit later this week as we wanted to wait to see what happened on the trade deadline and potentially get a look at any new additions. The Flames made a minor trade for Oscar Fantenberg from the LA Kings, which we will discuss.

First period: A quick review of a 4-0-0 week by the Flames including two impressive wins over the Islanders and a couple of shakier wins over the Senators (farm team) and the Anaheim Ducks. After that we dive into the Flames basically standing pat and only making one minor move at the deadline. We have plenty of thoughts on it.

Second Period: An around the league report where we talk about the bigger deals that went down and our initial impressions on how those individual deals look. This includes the Stone trade to Vegas, Simmonds and Granlund to Nashville, Nyquist to the Sharks… and that’s just the Pacific division!

Third Period: Our co-hosts pick their winners and losers of the trade deadline including: the Winnipeg Jets, Nashville Predators, Minnesota Wild, New York Rangers, and Montreal Canadiens. Do you agree or disagree with any of our picks?

No overtime this week as this is already our longest episode. There was a ton to talk about and we hope you enjoy this one!

Episode 015

Hey listeners! This week our co-hosts discuss a solid week of hockey for the Flames. With a loss in overtime to the Sabres followed by wins over the Red Wings and Oilers, the Flames are in good shape on top of the Western Conference. We talk about Sam Bennett and Derek Ryan as well as the second powerplay unit.

In the second period we discuss some of the trades that have happened around the league. The Ducks have been making moves trying save the season, the Wild bizarrely traded a pretty good forward in Niederreiter for a struggling forward they hope will become pretty good again in Rask, and the Oilers have players hit the waiver wire and sign their new starter in a bit of a head-shaker.

The third period this week will be another team profile, this time: the New York Islanders. The Isles are the surprise team of the league this season after their franchise player left to star in Toronto. They found a good coaching staff and find themselves the current Metro Division leaders. We take a look at the now and the near future for the Islanders.

Overtime: In the wake of the Koskinen signing in Edmonton, we discuss David Rittich and what sort of contract he might be looking at as a Restricted Free Agent with arbitration rights.

Episode 011

Welcome to Episode 11! Tonight our co-hosts are recording from different locations with Andy in Dallas with the Flames and Jim left behind in Calgary.

In the first period, we discuss a very solid 3-0-0 week for the Flames that included a wild comeback vs Philadelphia, a tight-checking and somewhat nasty affair in Minnesota, and finally a very public humiliation in St. Louis.

For the second period we change gears and take a look at the importance of specialty teams. Using a complex mathematical formula (Powerplay%+Penalty Kill%=Overall Special Teams%) we look at the league’s best when it comes to special teams. You might be surprised by some teams that are in the top 5 and also by some teams *cough* Toronto Maple Leafs *cough* that didn’t make the cut.

In the third period we discuss the validity of Ken Hitchcock’s complaint that Connor McDavid is not drawing enough penalties. He has drawn 11 so far this season, which is tied for 17^th in the league. We examine the players who have drawn more than him and try to determine if Hitchcock is just whining or if he might be on to something. Then we argue about whether top players should get special treatment from the refs.

Finally in Overtime we stick with the basics and do a little rapid fire trivia.
